Docent Outliner…why in the world?

July 3, 2009

QuestionMark1I am amazed that we still get calls/inquiries from people using Docent Outliner.  Docent is long gone as a product, its technology is 10 years old (at least), it has been through the SumTotal merger and yet another acquisition.  Those issues aside, using Outliner is painful.  It is a programmer-centric, fat client application that produces a messy runtime course.  I understand SumTotal has a “bridge”  to let one run these old courses on their new platform…but what kind of a business decision is that?  You are still stuck with proprietary content with more layers of software involved.

To help people get out of the Outliner mess we have a great conversion utility and a lot of experience untangling Outliner messes.  Are you one of those unlucky people that use Outliner as a “wrapper” or do you have a bunch of true Outliner “code” in your course?  More on the wrappering concept/mess in a later post.

We would love to understand what is keeping you using this product.  While there is some expense in converting, with your content in a new, web-based and easy to maintain format the ROI can be amazing.
